Sutton Coldfield
Sutton Coldfield Golf Club, located to the north of Birmingham, occupies a small corner of the wonderfully expansive and natural environs of Sutton Park. Perhaps not as lauded as nearby Little Aston, and Copt Heath, this heathland gem also lays down a really enjoyable test of golf in a wonderfully natural setting.
The current layout, essentially a ten-hole loop followed by a slightly more undulating eight-hole loop, quietly winds its way through a mix of open heathland and woodland.
You can thank the great Dr Alister Mackenzie for the thoroughly enjoyable design, and for the relatively small, subtly-sloping greens ... which, by the way, must be some of the truest in all of England. So good are the putting surfaces, that they are protected by a (non-electric) wire that encircles each green ... well, there are cows still roaming free on this ancient heath. Each wire surround comes complete with a little doorway!
You'll hopefully stay out of the fine array of heather and gorse, and birch and oak, that line the good width, not overly undulating fairways. At the delightful par-3 9th, the green is seemingly surrounded by the tall majestic oak trees ... with just enough of an opening to wriggle the ball onto the green ... delightful!
A thoroughly enjoyable front-nine, with three back-to-back par-5s at 5, 6 and 7, moves up a gear or two for the back-nine. Here a tad more undulation and modest elevation change can be found. Although the clubhouse (not the club's most stand-out feature) is located across a busy road from the course, within its walls you'll be guaranteed a warm welcome from the staff and members alike.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.

The emblem of Sutton Coldfield Golf Club is the red and white "Tudor Rose" of England. The House of Tudor ruled England from 1485 until 1603, with five monarchs in that period: Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and finally Elizabeth I.
Sutton Coldfield is the home club of European Tour player Robert Rock, who apparently loves the pace and quality of the excellent greens.
