Sundridge Park Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1901

Sundridge Park Golf Club is home to two excellent championship courses, both originally laid out by the great Willie Park Jr. The East course, a former Open Championship pre-qualifying venue, is the slightly longer and less undulating layout, which often gets top billing. However, members will wisely inform you that the West is the more scenic, with stunning views of the London skyline on offer from its highest elevations.

A short walk down the hill from the excellent clubhouse brings you to the par-4 opener of the East course. Exuding a pleasantly tree-lined parkland persona, the East contains several holes played from wonderfully elevated tees.

The River Kyd Brook occasionally lies in wait across or alongside some of the good-width fairways. Stylish bunkering, large subtly sloping greens and top-quality greenkeeping all reinforce Sundridge Park's credentials as one of southeast London's best.

The West course brings the River Quaggy into play on a few holes, not least at the par-4 opener which plays down from the clubhouse terrace, and back up to an elevated green. Elevation changes feature strongly on the 6,000-yard par-69 West course. Mainly tree-lined, the layout's undulations and spectacular views will leave a lasting impression.

Sundridge Park's layouts "play fair". The good-width fairways and second-cut are thankfully not flanked by deep uncompromising rough, and the tree-line defining the holes is not too dense. Water comes into play on a few holes, but not too frequently. The often large greens are home to subtle slopes and borrows, rather than roller-coaster undulations. But beware those subtle breaks ... they are ever-present!

Pick of the holes: amongst many excellent holes on the East course, the elevated-tee-to-elevated-green par-5 13th, is one of the layout's most handsome. The uphill par-3 15th, played to a well-bunker defended green is another terrific hole, as is the "signature" plunging par-4 18th, also played to an elevated well-defended green. On the West course the downhill par-4 9th serves-up a stunning panorama of one of the planet's greatest cities.

Did you know?

Sundridge Park is set within the beautiful grounds of a Grade 1 listed mansion. For centuries the land and mansion house passed through generations of families, who bought and sold it for various uses.

Sir Claude Scott bought the estate in 1796, pulled the old house down and rebuilt the present mansion in 1801 as his own residence. Various generations of the Scott family used the mansion as their home. The mansion house sits on the right side of the East course's par-4 14th hole; it is now divided into 26 luxury apartments.
