Sudbury Golf Club: Originally founded as Acton Golf Club in 1896, the club moved in 1920 to its present location at what was then Horsenden Farm, alongside the Grand Union Canal. The renowned Harry Colt was charged with designing the new course and the firm of Fowler & Simpson set about implementing Colt's design.
The course has many recognisable "Colt" characteristics: two nine-hole loops that each head out-and-back from the clubhouse; good-width but never overly generous fairways; a mix of straightaway and doglegging hole; "pulpit" (elevated) greens defended by left and right front bunkers, and a relative absence of water hazards (Colt was aware of the pain of golfers losing balls into water).
Typical of so many of his courses, Sudbury is a Colt design that gives equal consideration to both the "accomplished player" and what he called the "duffer". The lightly tree-lined holes enjoy a modest degree of elevation change, but blind shots are kept to a minimum (another welcome Colt trait).
Although residing in the heart of London's western suburbs, only at the good-length downhill par-4 1st do you play alongside a road. The remainder of the course offers a peaceful parkland oasis, flanked by another golf club to the west (the 9-hole Horsenden Hill GC) and the Grand Union Canal to the south. Housing flanks only one hole, the leftside of the tough but bunkerless uphill par-4 18th. As ever, Colt has you signing off with one of the layout's most challenging holes.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; only members and their invited guests on weekends.
Must book in advance. Handicap required.

Sudbury Golf Club is located alongside the Grand Union Canal, a vital part of the British canal system that links most of Britain's major cities. At one time a vital trade route between London and Birmingham, today the Grand Union Canal is mainly used for leisure boating, not least by the older style "narrowboats" that once plied the waterways in great numbers.
Just two miles from the club is the home of English football - the world famous Wembley Stadium.
124th US Open: the No.2 Course at Pinehurst once again plays host to this most illustrious championship (June 13-16). Wyndham Clark defends his title, having won at Los Angeles CC in 2023.
79th Women’s US Open: the second women’s major championship of the season gets underway at Lancaster CC in Pennsylvania. It’s the second time the championship has been held here.
(May 30-June 2).
Nelly Korda: won the Mizuho Americas Open (May 16-19) at Liberty National GC, continuing her extraordinary form in LPGA events. This was her sixth win in seven starts in 2024.
Xander Schauffele: recorded his first major championship win, and second record-equalling low score of 62 in a major. Only he, Branden Grace, Rickie Fowler and Shane Lowry have achieved this feat in a men’s major championship.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
