Pine Ridge Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1993

Pine Ridge Golf Club: in terms of golf course DNA, Pine Ridge possesses much of the character of its loftier local peers ... a thoroughly enjoyable and well crafted heathland gem, where the swish of pine trees is accompanied by the fast run of the ball scampering across firm easy-draining turf. But price-wise, this busy and popular layout represents a real bargain when compared to its high-end high-price Surrey-Berkshire neighbours ... amongst them Sunningdale, The Berkshire, Swinley Forest and Camberley Heath (a very near neighbour).

The excellent opening trio of holes on Pine Ridge's front-nine loop, are played through tree-lined corridors of pine. Great scene-setters for the round to come. The elevated-tee to elevated-green par-4 2nd, with a water ditch potentially in play from the tee, is a most handsome heathland hole.

The second-half of the front-nine, played in flatter and relatively open terrain, has a sequence of parallel running holes that eventually take you back to the clubhouse. Thankfully this flatter and less memorable stretch is bettered by a more undulating back-nine, where once again you are back amongst the pines.

Along the way at Pine Ridge you'll enjoy the easy-paced gently sloping greens, and, like many a heathland course, an almost complete absence of water. There's also several shortish par-4's and 5's for larruping big hitters. Don't be put off by the occasional sound of rifle fire from the nearby Bisley butts, or the fast running fairways, which can become super-fast, especially if the sandy soil dries out under a persistent summer sun. At weekends, those firm fast fairways can translate into slow rounds.

Pick of the holes: 15-16-17 comprises a memorable triumverate. The par-4 15th demands a blind drive, where a gentle draw over a ridge will serve you well. At the par-4 16th you see all before you, but a full-blooded tilt down the narrow fairway to the green may not be your best strategy. The par-3 17th is a teasing "wee demon". The small green is protected by a large gaping front bunker that will surely get your attention! Don't under-club!

Did you know?

Since 2007, Pine Ridge has been part of the Crown Group of public daily fee golf courses located in the south of England. The collection includes about ten golf clubs and centres, amongst them St Mellion (Cornwall), Milford (Surrey) and South Winchester (Hants), which are also covered in this website.

Pine Ridge was designed by local golfer and owner at the time, Clive Smith. It opened in 1993 during a period when the golf market was booming, and new courses were being built with great regularity. Pine Ridge was designed to target the daily fee golf market, but with a higher design and build quality than many of its municipal or public peers.
