London Golf Club (International course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1994

London Golf Club (International course): Located just a couple of miles outside the M25 orbital motorway, London Golf Club was inspired by Japanese businessman Masao Nagahara. It is home to two excellent layouts: the private, Jack Nicklaus designed Heritage course, and the equally attractive, public-access International course, created by Ron Kirby (at the time a member of Nicklaus Design).

Both London Golf Club's courses are set in wonderfully open rolling Kent countryside. The International course sees more top-level tournament play than its sibling, the members-only Heritage, making the International the better known of the two layouts.

The International roams across undulating but not excessively hilly terrain, exuding a distinctly open and linksy character. The long grassy rough can be punishing, although the fairways and semi-rough provide acceptably generous landing areas from the tee. The quality of the large and sloping greens, as well as general course maintenance are up there with the excellent standards of the Heritage.

On five holes (two par-3s and three par-5s) water lies menacingly in wait for anything hit short of the green, making club selection vital. The superb par-3 12th is a real knee-trembler, demanding a downhill shot with only water between you and the green.

Each of the water-protected par-5s gives the option to lay-up or go for it. The extent to which you are tempted on these risk-reward holes will flow from the quality of your drive and how well you are striking your hybrid or long-irons.

As with the Heritage, the International edges close to the M20 in a few places, while the distant revving of racing cars from far-away Brands Hatch can sometimes be heard - in both cases this occasional noise is not at all bothersome.
