Llanymynech Golf Club: known locally as "the Hill", this is a golf course like few others. Most famously (and uniquely) the par-4 4th hole at Llanymynech has you teeing-off in one country (Wales) and putting-out in another (England). Also unforgettable are the views - simply stunning, whether you are looking down onto the expansive Shropshire Plain, or into Wales and away towards the Snowdonia mountains (and not a single wind turbine or electricity pylon in sight).
The golf course itself feels at times like a parkland course, at others it has distinctly moorland overtones. Perched high above the surrounding villages on a limestone plateau, the openness of the original layout has changed over the years, with many small trees, particularly hawthorn, birch and the like, now lining many of the fairways.
Among an excellent and often challenging array of holes the par-3s are noteworthy. A shortish par-3 starts the round, three are played to elevated blind greens, and another plunges downhill (away from a dry stone wall that marks the English-Welsh border).
Several par-4s require accuracy rather than length from the tee, easier to play once you get to know this constantly undulating and always interesting course. Llanymynech is more straightforward and fairer than many courses that have to be inventively shaped to fit their surroundings - and (worth repeating) the views from this one are spectacular.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; more restricted on weekends.

Knowing which country you are in is one of the unique challenges of Llanymynech. Despite its Shropshire address (Shropshire is an English county), the clubhouse and 15 of the holes are actually in Wales, with only three holes (4, 5 & 6) located in England. Somewhere on the short drive up from the village of Pant (in England) you crosss the border into Wales.
The Welsh leader Caractacus was widely thought to have made his last stand against the Romans on "the Hill" in A.D.50 before he was captured and taken to Rome.
Llanymynech is the original home club of one of Wales' greatest golfers, Ian Woosnam. Amongst many accolades, "Woosie" was a major championship winner, multiple European Tour winner, successful on the PGA and other international tours, and a winning Ryder Cup captain. He also features on Llanymynech's Family Cup, which he won with his mother, Mrs J Woosnam in 1976. Woosnam moved from Llanymynech to nearby Oswestry Golf Club before setting out on the European Tour..
