From Shrewsbury take the A49 north, direction Whitchurch. After 11.6 miles turn right off the A49, direction Hawkstone Park and Follies. After o.5 miles turn left (after Church) direction Hawkstone Park Hotel. Golf and Hotel are 400 yards straight ahead.
Hawkstone Park Hotel & Golf (Hawkstone Course): Of the two courses here at Hawkstone Park, the Hawkstone course is the older and arguably the more scenic layout. Benefitting from some deft alterations which James Braid made to the original Albert Shepherd layout, the course is both captivating and at times frustrating, especially with several blind drives to make on the back-nine.
The main interest on the lightly wooded and fairly compact front-nine is the par-4 5th, a testing golf hole and, rather unusually, the site of a Second World War prisoner of war camp. The front-nine is somewhat overshadowed by the back-nine, which is picturesquely woven between some large rocky outcrops and sandstone cliffs that are home to several follies.
Five blind drives are required on the back-nine, which will constantly challenge you with some intriguingly created golf holes. The touches of design eccentricity call for accurate shot-making and good course management. Hawkstone Park's two enjoyable and excellent value courses can get quite busy, so don't be surprised if the going is rather slow at weekends.
Pick of the holes: the 518-yard 10th (Road Hole), is a par-5 which runs alongside the cliffs. The 12th (Moat) is played from an elevated tee onto a small green; the hole takes its name from an original feature of a ruined castle, around which the course was designed.

Hawkstone Park, the setting for the two championship golf courses, is a well-known historical park with hidden pathways, concealed grottos, secret tunnels and a remarkable collection of follies. The golf club here has strong associations with one of Scotland's greatest golfers, Sandy Lyle. This is where he spent his formative golfing years, with his father Alex, the club professional. Hawkstone's purpose built Golf Centre is housed in an impressive new clubhouse, while 66-rooms of on-site accommodation are available in the Hawkstone Park Hotel, which was expanded from a travellers' inn that dates back to 1790.
