Fulwell Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1904

Fulwell Golf Club is home to a well-regarded golf course, laid out in the early-1900s by J.H. Taylor, and later modified by Dr Alister MacKenzie. This tree-lined parkland layout will test most facets of your game, with several attractive holes and features in the mix.

Occupying relative flat, easy-walking terrain, this pleasant parkland layout offers the opportunity for a relaxed round of golf in West London. The holes are well defined by a wonderful variety of trees, including majestic oaks, scots pine, douglas firs and two or three attractive stands of eucalyptus. Although a water ditch puts in a few appearances, notably in front of the par-4 1st, par-5 5th, par-3 9th and par-4 18th greens, it is the original subtly sloping greens and recently renovated bunkers that define Fulwell's key challenges.

The relatively flat fairways are sufficiently wide not to induce too much stress on the tee. However, accuracy is demanded on a few tee-shots to set up your tilt at the green ... not least at the testing dogleg par-4 2nd, and long par-5 17th where the second shot is key.

Pick of the holes: Fairway bunkering and a front-of-green water ditch combine to create the testing closing par-4 18th at Fulwell. From the tee you can take dead aim at the clubhouse clocktower, before flighting your approach shot over the ditch, all under the watchful eye of those already reposing on the clubhouse terrace.

Did you know?

The course here was originally developed as a 36-hole layout. Leading tournament professional and course designer J.H. Taylor crafted a men's "outer" course as well as an "inner" course for ladies and higher handicappers. This original set-up was similar to the inner and outer layouts at nearby Mid-Surrey Golf Club (later Royal Mid-Surrey), where Taylor was the club professional from 1898 until 1948.

Fulwell Golf Club lies in the corner of what was formerly Hounslow Heath, an infamous haunt of highwaymen in the 17th and 18th centuries. Also in the vicinity is Twickenham Stadium, the home of England rugby, known to many as "Twickers" or "HQ".

At the north end of the current Fulwell course is the David Lloyd Centre nine-hole golf course and teaching academy (formerly Twickenham Golf Course). The course was developed from part of the old 36-hole Fulwell layout.
