Croham Hurst Golf Club is home to a very pleasant parkland course, which benefitted from the combined design skills of James Braid and Frederick G. Hawtree. The west side of the course is flanked by Croham Hurst Woods, giving the layout its quiet leafy persona, typical of many excellent courses found in the historic county of Surrey.
The essentially parkland layout, with some downland-heathland overtones, ebbs and flows over the gently undulating, chalk-based, easy draining terrain. At its centre, also the highest point of the course, you'll find the 2nd, 8th and 13th greens, complemented by the teeing grounds of the 6th, 9th and 14th. Both the par-5 10th and par-4 18th play back down to the clubhouse, with Croydon's ever-expanding skyline providing an impressive backdrop. The long-par-4 1st and par-3 11th both play uphill and away from the clubhouse.
Not overly long at 6,200 yards from the tips, the layout gives you plenty of elbow room for your drives. Around the mercurially sloping, good-sized greens, there's attractive bunkering, mounding and some more pronounced banking to contend with.
Pick of the holes: the arguably stronger back-nine serves up a delightful trio of par-3s. Played from in front of the clubhouse, the uphill 11th is perhaps the toughest of the three. Like the shorter 13th, and longer, well-bunkered downhill par-3 16th, they all play to greens that are definitely not guaranteed two putt territory when safely aboard.

The club logo features a giant redwood tree (sequoia giganteum or Wellingtonia), which stands next to the clubhouse terrace, just outside the Proshop. It was originally planted in 1857 to commemorate the death of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington.
Croham is an area in the south London suburb of South Croydon. Its name, first recorded in the 13th century, means an enclosure or village (ham) frequented by crows.
The term "hurst" can be applied to a small hill, a sandbank or a wooded rise, all three of which apply in the case of Croham Hurst Golf Club. Perhaps the most famous "golfing" hurst is Pinehurst in North Carolina.
