Coxmoor
Coxmoor Golf Club is home to an excellently maintained and well-rated heathland golf course. As one of Nottinghamshire's "big four" (together with nearby Notts GC "Hollinwell", Sherwood Forest and Worksop), this is a must play if you are visiting the county.
The opening long par-4 1st and downhill par-3 2nd are excellent scene-setters for this gently undulating and thoroughly absorbing heathland layout. Pine, birch, heather and gorse are much in evidence, as well as stylish bunkering and plenty of elevation change.
Several holes are played from elevated tees, then back up to elevated greens, while a few demand blind drives from the tee. The tree-line here, defining the good-width fairways, is never too dense ... maintaing a pleasant heathland openness to proceedings. Water hazards are infrequent, but most definitely threaten at the par-4 14th, where a St Andrews-style Swilken bridge graces the hole.
Both the layout's nine-hole loops start and finish at the modern, wood-panelled and geometrically-shaped clubhouse. From here, at the highest part of the course, views across to Mansfield and surrounds can be enjoyed.
Pick of the holes: amongst a wonderfully varied collection of par-3 holes, the uphill 17th is flanked by a heathery bank on its rightside, and menacing bunkers left ... there's definite shades of Sunningdale here.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; more restricted at weekends.
