Coombe Hill Golf Club: this quiet and discreetly tucked-away aristocrat amongst the capital's elite golf clubs, is located in southwest London in an area abundant with golf courses. Just to the east lies its near neighbour, Royal Wimbledon GC, which can be glimpsed from Coombe Hill's clubhouse and one or two holes.
Set in a quiet woodland environment, the layout at Coombe Hill is a classically big and bold Abercromby design. Here you'll find excellent bunkering, as well as many elevated tees and greens ... all expansively laid-out on the undulating heathland/parkland terrain. Heather and particularly rhododendrons are very much in evidence. Perhaps surprisingly, and despite the many slopes, the course is relatively easy to walk. Only at the par-4 16th and par-4 18th will you notice the uphill climbs.
Plenty of golfing challenge is contained within the layout's undulating holes. At the par-4 10th you are required to make a fully blind tee shot. You'll be hitting up and over a heather-clad WW2 bomb crater, with plenty of fairway width (as is typically the case) for a safe landing. There are one or two other semi-blind tee shots in the mix on this excellently presented out-and-back layout.
The best of the longer range views beyond the course comes at the 16th green. Like many other greens, it is opulently large, with much more slope than you'd think hidden away in its seemingly gentle demeanour. The 18th green, splendidly sited in front of the clubhouse terrace, is perhaps the largest of them all.
Pick of the holes: famed for its par-3 holes, the 9th at Coombe Hill, played just after the halfway house, is a stunner. With close-cut aprons cascading down on either side of a central front bunker, and more bunkering to left and right, this picture perfect hole beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Coombe Hill. The two back-nine par-3s, both playing slightly uphill, are also gems. And best not to forget another handsome back-nine duo, the uphill par-4 11th and 16th holes.
Visitors welcome on Mon, Tues & Thurs; only members and their invited guests on Weds, Fri and weekends.

Coombe Hill's logo depicts a rhodedendron flower, of which you will see a stunning display bordering many holes during the months of May and into June. Not only can Coombe Hill boast a star-studded cohort of members past and present, but four of its professionals have won the coveted Open Championship ... Sandy Herd (1902); Arthur Havers (1923); Henry Cotton (1934, '37, '48), and Dick Burton (1939).
Completed in the early part of the 1900s, the golf course designs of John Frederick "Aber" Abercromby are much revered amongst golf aficianados. Although not as prolific a designer as the likes of Harry Colt, James Braid and Tom Simpson, four courses around London provide a compelling testament to the excellence and thoroughness of Abercromby's design skills.
These Abercromby exemplars are: The Addington, which he founded and where he lived for many years as the club's "benevolent dictator"; Coombe Hill, where he conducted an initial site inspection by hot air balloon; Knole Park, near Sevenoaks, and Worplesdon, one of the revered three W's (with Woking and West Hill).
