Burhill Golf Club (Old course): laid out in the grounds of a Georgian mansion house, this quintessentially English parkland course is another of Willie Park Jr's top drawer designs. It is kept company at Burhill by the more recent Simon Gidman-designed New course.
On Burhill's Old course, the flatter front-nine, and more undulating holes of the stronger back-nine are lightly lined with a wonderful variety of trees. Amongst them are many centuries-old gnarled oaks. Beyond the course lies quiet woodland. There's also one or two horse paddocks (popular in this area of leafy Surrey, it seems), and a handful of mansionesque properties.
The good-width fairways never feel too constricting from the tee. There's plenty of space to work the ball here, and only a couple of times when water ditches threaten. Around the good-sized, sometimes two-tier greens is where most of the stylish bunkering resides. That said, the cross-bunkering at the par-4 8th creates a particularly handsome hole.
Pick of the holes: after a quick refreshment stop at the excellent halfway house, you are ready to enjoy Burhill's more varied back-nine and its best stretch of holes. This includes the long uphill par-3 10th (often played into a southwesterly wind), the superb downhill par-4 11th, and a cheeky sunken-green at the driveable (for big hitters) par- 4 12th. The stretch is rounded off by another testing and attractive par-3 at 13, played into a wooded enclave.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends, but more restricted at weekends.

The clubhouse of Burhill Golf Club is a former Georgian mansion house, which is steeped in history and dates back to 1726. It was built as a private residence by Peter De La Porte, a wealthy London thread merchant.
The Golf Club was established in 1907 by the Guinness family. During World War Two, the Burhill estate was requisitioned by the Ministry of Aircraft Production, and it was whilst working here that Barnes Wallis (of "Dambusters" fame) developed the famous "Bouncing Bomb."
Rumour has it, and it would only seem to be a rumour, that the house on the rightside of the 14th hole was once lived in, or at least frequented, by notorious highwayman Dick Turpin (1705-39).
