Betchworth Park Golf Club: Perhaps not one of Surrey's best known courses, but once again a real gem from that master-designer Harry Colt.
The first hole introduces you to a bit of climbing, but don't imagine this a particularly hilly course (although it has its moments on two or three occasions). The first hole also introduces you to the gorgeous views of the North Downs, including the ever-popular Box Hill, and across the expansive and serenely rural Surrey countryside.
The course has many excellent holes, not least the par-4 4th that is played from a wonderfully elevated tee, definitely Betchworth's signature hole. There are quite a few marker posts to guide several blind tee shots, but there is also enough space here not to feel too constrained from the tee.
Visitors welcome on weekdays, and after midday on weekends.
Must book in advance.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

ABOUT HARRY COLT: the layout at Betchworth Park was designed by one of the most revered of all golf course architects, Henry Shapland "Harry" Colt. Born in 1869 in Highgate (north London), Colt studied law at Cambridge, and captained the Cambridge University Golf Club in 1890. After establishing himself as a course designer, he worked predominantly with Charles Alison, John Morrison and Alister MacKenzie. The firm Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd was formed in 1928.
During his illustrious career Colt participated in the design of over 300 courses. His portfolio includes Sunningdale (Old & New), Rye, St George's Hill, Royal Porthcawl and Wentworth (East & West) in the UK; Hamilton and Toronto in Canada and Pine Valley near Philadelphia (in collaboration with owner George Crump). He also carried out extensive redesigns of Muirfield and Royal Liverpool.
