Aspley Guise & WS
Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club enjoys its reputation as home to a pleasantly undulating tree-lined course. This classy par-71 parkland-cum-heathland design, laid out in two nine-hole loops, is not overly long at just over 6,000 yards from the back tees.
Water is not a factor here, but plenty of trees, good-quality greenside bunkering and usually excellent greens will test and probe your game. Several tightish tree-lined fairways and the undulating terrain frequently place a premium on accurate shot-making and good course management, if a good score is to be carded.
The older back-nine is arguably the tougher of the two, with greater elevation change creating some of the layout's more dramatic holes. From the course's higher elevations you'll enjoy fine views of the surrounding Bedfordshire countryside.
Pick of the holes: the relatively short par-4 16th sports an attractive Swilken-style bridge (the Centenary Bridge), as well as cross-bunkering in front of the attractively framed two-tier green. The uphill par-5 14th, with its backdrop of Scots pines, is another excellent looking hole. And so too the club's "signature" par-3 10th, played from in front of the clubhouse, with a "ravine" to cross en route to the well bunker-defended green.

An excellent history of Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club is documented on the club's own website. The following is a small extract from that history:
The Woburn & District Reporter carried an article in May 1912 stating: "Some 12 months ago on the initiative of the Rev. Malby and Mr Wilkinson, a plan was prepared for a nine-hole golf course on land from the cricket ground down to Rodwell Pit ( ... Rodwell Pit is the wooded area behind the 18th tee). In March 1913 the same newspaper reported that "a meeting of interested parties was held at 'The Holt' to discuss the golf links" (The Holt, now the Moore Place Hotel, was a private house at the time).
