Mission Hills Haikou (The Vintage course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2011

The Vintage course at Mission Hills, Haikou is an easy-walking course that ranks with some of the best on Hainan Island. The holes were routed to leave this heavily wooded site as undisturbed as possible, while also giving plenty of "elbow room" for big-hitters. Various features are borrowed from U.S. courses such as the National Golf Links, Fishers Island, Maidstone, Chicago Golf Club and Garden City, giving a distinct nod to days of old.

Much of the green complex design and bunkering utilises irregular, sometimes geometric shapes and quirky features that originate from turn of the century courses. Abrupt chocolate-drop mounds, deep pots, square edges, ridges, blind shots, long and thin bunkers bordering small and huge greens, and wicker basket pins are all to be found on The Vintage layout.

Mission Hills Haikou, home to no less than 10 golf courses, is one of the world's largest golf clubs (if not the largest). The courses range in size and stature from the highly-acclaimed Blackstone tournament and Lava Fields layouts, down to the more modestly-sized Stepping Stone and Double Pin executive courses.

Did you know?

The Vintage course was the host venue for the 2012 World Ladies Championship, in which China won the individual, team and amateur titles.

Schmidt-Curley Design, and principally Brian Curley, laid out and built all ten layouts at Mission Hills Haikou on Hainan Island. The firm was also responsible for crafting ten of the 12 courses at the "World’s Largest Golf Club," namely the Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong province (formerly Canton). The 12 courses are spread between three closely grouped locations, midway between Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Co-founders of Schmidt-Curley, Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, both worked alongside Pete Dye for several years. Recognition for their work includes consistently high rankings for many of their courses, and acknowledgement as one of the world’s “most influential” course design companies of the recent era.
