The Lava Fields course at Mission Hills, Haikou is one of the top-rated and finest championship layouts in China. While similar in many respects to the Blackstone tournament course, Lava Fields provides a more open and less tree-lined golfing challenge. The layout offers a memorable journey through small canyons and across the naturally occurring lava deposits.
In this expansive environment, the good-width doglegging fairways and rustic-edged bunkering contrast with the black lava base rock, creating a visually arresting layout. At 7,400 yards from the tips, it too is capable of hosting significant competitive events. Wrapped around the Lava Fields course is one of its Mission Hills Haikou stablemates, the Meadow Links layout.
Mission Hills Haikou, home to no less than 10 golf courses, is one of the world's largest golf clubs (if not the largest). The courses range in size and stature from the highly-acclaimed Blackstone tournament and Lava Fields layouts, down to the more modestly-sized Stepping Stone and Double Pin executive courses.

Schmidt-Curley Design, and principally Brian Curley, laid out and built all ten layouts at Mission Hills Haikou on Hainan Island. The firm was also responsible for crafting ten of the 12 courses at the "World’s Largest Golf Club," namely the Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong province (formerly Canton). The 12 courses are spread between three closely grouped locations, midway between Shenzhen and Dongguan.
Co-founders of Schmidt-Curley, Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, both worked alongside Pete Dye for several years. Recognition for their work includes consistently high rankings for many of their courses, and acknowledgement as one of the world’s “most influential” course design companies of the recent era.
