Puntacana Resort & Club (La Cana course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2001

Puntacana Resort & Club (La Cana Golf Club course): When Pete Dye's Teeth of the Dog course burst onto the Caribbean scene in 1971, few imagined the impressive array of Dominican golf courses that would follow. 30 years later, Dye's youngest son "P.B." blazed the golfing trail in the east of the island, designing the La Cana course, with its Arrecife and Tortuga nines. More recently P.B. extended the original 18 by adding the "inland" Hacienda-nine.

La Cana's good-width fairways should inspire big-hitters, with expansive sandy waste areas collecting anything hit too far offline. A profusion of Himalayan mounding and stylish bunkering lurks greenside, while small lakes and ponds threaten your approach shots at the par-3 3rd and par-4 6th (Tortuga), par-4 2nd (Arrecife) and 1st, 4th and 5th holes on the newer Hacienda-nine. Among many other features, the 3rd hole (Arrecife) throws up a rock-lined island-green par-3. Look out for the natural grotto next to the green on Tortuga's par-4 opener. Other highlights on Tortuga come at the beautiful beachside par-3 5th, and the risk-reward dog-legging par-4 7th.

With its fabulous oceanside holes and excellently crafted design, the La Cana course is understandably in Dominican's top echelon. Its luxurious beachside clubhouse also offers ocean views and a bonus "19th" hole (should that be "28th?") ranks with the very best in the Caribbean.

Pick of the holes: The immensely scenic La Cana course, crescendoes at the fabulous par-4 8th and par-5 9th on its Arrecife-nine. The turqouise waters of the Caribbean Sea will swallow-up anything hit too far left on this fabulous closing duo. On the "safer" rightside of these two spectacular oceanside holes a lavish array of bunkering lies in wait. A mere 72 yards deep, the Arrecife's final green is definitely three-putt territory, or worse. A Pebble Beach-style ending to your round.

Did you know?

The development of the Puntacana Resort & Club dates back to 1971 when Dominican businessman and hotelier Frank R. Rainieri teamed-up with Theodore W. Kheel, a prominent New York attorney and labor mediator, to create this renowned resort and real estate community.

Puntacana Resort & Club's first golf course was the P.B. Dye designed La Cana course, comprising the Arrecife and Tortuga nines. P.B. returned to extend the La Cana course to 27-holes, adding the Hacienda-nine in 2012, as the centrepiece of a 400-home community. Puntacana's Corales course, was designed by Tom Fazio, a member of another legendary golf design "dynasty".
