Silvertip
Silvertip Golf Resort: Cradled by the magnificent Canadian Rockies and perched on the lower slopes of Mount Lady Macdonald, Silvertip is one of a small group of excellent championship courses clustered around Banff and Canmore. Spectacular mountain peaks, waving grasslands, alpine forests and deep valleys all contribute to the vistas you'll enjoy at Silvertip.
Laid out on the south-facing slopes of the Bow Valley, this often technically demanding course is more mountain-style than parkland, with dramatic elevation changes and several drives needing to be played from lofty tees.
As you embark on the roaming front-nine loop, you'll quickly experience some of the 600 ft of elevation change that separates the top and bottom of this layout. You'll also understand why golf carts are compulsory here; there are significant distances between some holes, not least from the 4th to the 5th - a good chance to take in the natural forest scenery.
It's certainly not a layout that responds well to a "grip-it and rip-it" strategy, especially if you are wayward. There are some tightish tee-shots to make and a need to hit accurate approach shots. The greens are seldom generously round, but more often long and thin, or narrow and wide.
There's no shortage of fabulous mountain and valley scenery to enjoy, with arguably the best saved until last. A stunning backdrop of countless Rocky Mountain peaks frames the par-4 18th. This dramatic hole plunges downhill to a green defended by a rock-lined ice-blue pond. A cascading water feature to the left of the green (not the only one you'll encounter on the back-nine) completes the stunning closing scene.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Golf season is end-April thru early-Oct.
Golf carts compulsory; carts are fitted with GPS.

Silvertip is part of Stone Creek Resorts Club, which has a sister resort and golf club, Eagle Ranch, located on the other side of the Rockies in Invermere, British Columbia.
Perched on the lower slopes (benchlands) of Mount Lady Macdonald, which climbs to 8,269 ft, the Silvertip course is certified under the Audubon International Cooperative Scheme.
Silvertip is an alternative name for a grizzly bear. Although varying in colour from blond to nearly black, grizzly bear fur is typically brown in color with white tips, hence the name Silvertip.
