Greywolf
Greywolf Golf Course: located high in the Purcell Mountains, Greywolf is laid out on pine-clad slopes that lie below the Purcell's rocky peaks. The clubhouse sits at 3,800 feet above sea level, and there's 300 feet of elevation change across the course. But don't think you're in for an arduous roller-coaster ride through the mountains.
Doug Carrick's handsome layout has little in common with the genre of mountain courses that are awkwardly squeezed onto uncompromising and unsuitable terrain. Far from it. Greywolf is an absolute delight to play, with a succession of excellently crafted and gloriously scenic holes, and a par-3 to die for (see Pick of the holes below).
Here at Greywolf, Carrick's two nine-hole loops present a fair and immensely scenic challenge for all golfers to enjoy. Before reaching the infamous "Cliffhanger" hole, the opening trio, two par-4s and a 5, involve a steady ascent from the clubhouse to the highest part of the course. The 4th and 5th bring you part-way downhill again.
The best of Greywolf's stunning collection of holes are generally found on the front-nine, although the mischievous par-3 15th played over water, and the plunging par-4 11th protected by a glacier-blue pond, also deserve a special mention. Needless to say roads and intrusive housing play no part here; the ski chalets at the course's lower elevations complement rather than detract from this alpine golfing feast.
Pick of the holes (Cliffhanger): in the middle of the front-nine is an absolute gem. If jaw-dropping "wow factor" holes are what spread the fame of top golf courses, then Greywolf has one of Canada's best - the infamous "Cliffhanger". Whether attempted from the tips (200 yards) or the more forgiving 155-yard forward tees, the 6th hole is simply stunning, one of the world's truly great par-3s. The green is perched atop a rocky pedestal. All around it are sheer cliffs. Behind it beautifully forested slopes stretch up to a lofty mountain summit. The 360-degree views from the green outdo even those from the tee.
