Capilano
Capilano Golf & Country Club: Renowned for its stately clubhouse and top-class amenities, the strength of Capilano lies in its Stanley Thompson designed golf course. Laid out on a gentle slope, the excellently crafted and predominantly tree-lined holes lay down many scenic golfing challenges. As you might expect from a Top10 Canadian course, maintenance and presentation standards at "Cap" (as it is known locally) are generally up there with the best.
Sitting at the highest part of the layout, the clubhouse offers stunning "alpine" views up to Mount Grouse and other notable peaks to the north. From the first tee of the downhill par-5 1st you look south to the Burrard Inlet, Lions Gate Bridge and the city of Vancouver.
Lining the way on your journey around this captivating course are towering Douglas firs, sequoias and many other native tree varieties. The top-quality greens are framed by stylishly created green surrounds (a Thompson hallmark) and plenty of "raised lip" bunkering. These expansive subtly-sloping putting surfaces have caused many headaches and heartbreaks.
Capilano's challenging and handsome layout takes full advantage of the topography and natural beauty of its location. Amongst the 18-holes are many Thompson classics, with the back-nine offering the best views beyond the course. The par-4 13th plays back uphill, its green beautifully framed by the clubhouse. After the short par-3 14th (the back-tee sits just behind the car park), the final four hole stretch is played to the north of, but still below the clubhouse.
The par-4 15th and 17th holes both enjoy a stunning backdrop provided by Crown Mountain. Capilano's par-5 18th, together with the par-5 1st, are two of Capilano's best. The wonderful closing hole doglegs into a raised and heavily bunkered green that sits just below the clubhouse terrace.
The bedrock of Stanley Thompson's great legacy is the world-class collection of courses he designed in his native Canada. In the west of the country, Capilano and the Rocky Mountain duo of Banff Springs and Jasper Park Lodge are the most revered examples of his work. Although Capilano may not have the Rockies as a backdrop, and may lack as many "dramatic" holes as its Alberta cousins, it is nonetheless a wonderful layout.

Capilano's first professional, Jock McKinnon achieved the remarkable feat of recording a lifetime eclectic score at Capilano of 33, which for 18 holes involves a score of 2 on fifteen holes, and aces on the other three.
Legendary Canadian golf course designer Stanley Thompson routinely has six of his layouts listed among the very best golf courses in Canada. The six are: Jasper Park Lodge (1925), Banff Springs (1928), St George's (1928), Westmount G&CC (1931), Capilano (1937) and Cape Breton Highlands (1939).
Canada's 6th best course (SCOREGolf, 2022).
