The story has it that Getúlio Vargas wanted to take up golf during his first term as President of Brazil (1934-45 ... during which time he was interim President, then President, and from 1938 a dictator-president). As a strong nationalist, Vargas was uncomfortable with joining Rio's existing Gavea Golf Club, known at the time as the "Englishman's Club".
Friends of the President commissioned Stanley Thompson to design a nine-hole layout (that later expanded to 27) in nearby Itanhangá. It was here that the President (whose handicap was never below 30) remained an enthusiastic member until his death in 1954.
