Metropolitan Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1901

Metropolitan Golf Club: Quietly located in South Oakleigh on Melbourne's famous sandbelt, the flattish terrain here at Metropolitan is home to one of Australia's finest and most exacting championship golf courses. For many golfers this is one of the best and most definitive in the sandbelt genre.

Many bushes as well as trees large and small adorn this excellent layout, giving you one strong and challenging tree-lined hole after another.

If you enjoy the test presented by avoiding bunkers, and/or playing from sand, you'll love the challenge of Metropolitan. Around the large and fast greens there is no escaping the threat the bunkering poses. Many of these deep and expansive sand traps are cut right up to (and sometimes into) the edges of the putting surfaces, often flanking the green on both sides.

Maintenance standards at this top-quality Melbourne golf club are as you might expect, excellent throughout. Metropolitan is not however a lone gem; just across its eastern boundary fence is the also superb Huntingdale Golf Club.

Did you know?

Metropolitan's origins date back to 1891 and are shared with Melbourne GC (which later became Royal Melbourne). When many Melbourne GC members moved further south from Malvern to establish a new course, those who remained adopted the name Caulfield GC. A further split in 1908 saw several Caulfield members move to a new location in South Oakleigh, taking the name Metropolitan GC.

Many top level tournaments have been hosted at Metropolitan including several Australian Open and Australian PGA championships (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Metropolitan).

Metropolitan's logo symbolises a huge, red flowering gum tree, which stands beside the clubhouse.
