Primm Valley (Desert)
Primm Valley Golf Club (Desert course): Located just inside California on the border with Nevada, and surrounded by natural, pristine desert, Primm Valley Golf Club boasts two dazzling championship courses. Both are designed by the legendary Tom Fazio, and though they sit side-by-side, the Lakes and Desert courses couldn't be more different.
While the excellent Lakes course is a softer-looking, tree-lined affair, its ruggedly handsome companion is a desert course by name and a desert course by nature.
From this rocky and open environment, you will enjoy many wonderful views onto the arid Ivanpah Valley and its bordering mountain ranges. The casinos at Primm can also be seen in the distance. Classic Mojave desert terrain and large sandy waste areas flank the nicely undulating fairways, the holes often looking a bit tighter and more challenging than those on the greener and some would say easier-going Lakes course.
Colourful cacti, lush palm trees and native vegetation are much in evidence, as is Fazio's superb and high-lipped bunkering, providing a constant threat as well as clear definition to each hole. Water makes infrequent but telling appearances, not least at the first two holes, which are wrapped around the same small lake.
Pick of the holes: perhaps saving the best until last, the par-4 17th and par-5 18th are beautifully crafted. Water comes into play on both, but the main challenge is hitting the elevated and heavily bunkered greens, then negotiating the testing slopes and borrows to finish your round in style.
